Name:
Shimmy Gray-Miller
Team:
Saint Louis Billikens
I coach because...
It’s acceptable to be competitive in the workplace when you’re a coach.
What I expected coaching basketball to be:
Crazy kids, long hours, dry erase markers, red eyes, sore throats, sleepless nights, and a whole lot of fun .
What it really is:
Crazy kids, long hours, dry erase markers, red eyes, sore throats, sleepless nights, and a whole lot of fun.
Advice I would give to an aspiring basketball coach:
Social life? Forget about it.
Why I love basketball:
I don’t think I can quantify that with one answer. It changes everyday. I love the competitiveness, the unpredictability, the passion, history, and emotion involved with it.
The women’s player that’s most fun to watch right now is...
Theresa Lisch, sophomore guard from Saint Louis University
One of the biggest misconceptions about coaching is...
That we’re all bad dressers. Just some of us are.
I'd go crazy on a road trip without...
My iPod or laptop .
A player (past or present) that I’ve been the most inspired by is (and why)...
Cheryl Miller. She was the first women’s basketball player that was visible for me on TV and I loved her talent and passion & flamboyance. I wanted to be Cheryl Miller. I thought I WAS Cheryl Miller! I remember writing #31 on my wrist bands in high school and telling people she was my cousin. I was Cheryl Miller without Cheryl Miller’s jumper, or handles, or post moves, or defense…..(but I had the finger wagging and trash talking down!)
Three things I'd like to do before I die...
Run with the bulls in Pamplona. Go on an African safari. Win a National Championship.
Working as part of a team with the other coaches allows me to...
Grow and be challenged on a daily basis.
The unsung hero of our team’s staff is...
Erin Wright, our administrative assistant. She is really MY boss.
